EMPLOYMENT LAW

JAMES R. TANNER

During his federal service as a civilian counsel with the Department of the Army from 1983 until 1998, he was assigned as a Labor Counselor, at Tooele Army Depot.  He reviewed numerous significant personnel actions including suspensions and removals.  He represented Tooele Depot and other military organizations before EEOC and MSPB administrative judges, as well, as a large number of arbitrators.

Mr. Tanner established a private practice of law in 1983, after retirement from the federal government.  He has focused primarily on employment law matters, including discharge, suspensions, and other disciplinary proceedings.  In addition, he represented employees in performance-based actions and adverse security clearance determinations.   For a period of years, he has represented clients in Utah Labor Commission (UALD) discrimination claims. He has assisted clients in submissions to employers in Pre-Determination decisions regarding the clients.  He has represented numerous federal employees facing discharge and other disciplinary proceedings, including MSPB and EEOC claims.

Mr. Tanner has previously served as a mediator on the Third District Court’s mediation panel.  He has served as counsel in numerous employment mediation proceedings.  He has taught employment law to undergraduate students and dispute resolution systems for MBA graduate students for the University of Phoenix.  Mr. Tanner has twice served as President of the Utah Employment Lawyers Association (UELA), a state affiliate of the National Employment Lawyer’s Association (NELA).  Mr. Tanner currently serves as an Administrative Hearing Officer, conducting hearings for Tooele City and, separately, for Tooele County.

Richard J. Tanner routinely represents criminal defendants in the Tooele County Third District Court. In addition, he represents clients before the Justice Courts in Grantsville, Tooele and Stockton, Utah. For over fifteen years, Tanner Law Office has provided criminal defense representation in the Tooele Justice Court. Richard Tanner have made numerous appearances on traffic tickets, DUI, drug-related cases, violation of city or county ordinances, and other misdemeanor charges. Richard routinely represents clients in the Third District Court. He routinely represents juvenile clients and, in some cases, parents of juveniles, in the Third District Juvenile Court involving issues of juvenile offenses, parental rights, and DCFS matters. He currently represents individuals on criminal charges in the Stockton Municipal Court.

Richard J. Tanner

Richard Tanner has routinely advised and represented clients from Tooele County, Salt Lake City, and surrounding counties, including Davis and Utah County, in family law matters, including divorce, child custody, child support, alimony and property settlement issues, adoption, and guardianship. He routinely makes appearances in the Tooele Third District Court, located within blocks from the Tanner Law Office.

Richard has represented a number of tenants and landlords in landlord tenant disputes in Tooele County. He has reviewed, advised on, and drafted numerous documents, including contracts, leases, general and special powers of attorney, durable powers of attorney, wills, living wills, medical directives, and other documents related to estate planning. Tanner Law Office is a provider for the Met-Life Legal Plan and Richard has drafted numerous documents and advised on numerous civil matters as a part of this plan.
